Good health and well-being are critical for us all, but sometimes we don’t make it a priority when we have busy schedules, but we should! Workplace fitness is important for individuals, a team, and the business, as people are the vital assets of every company! We often find ourselves feeling run down, or exhausted and don’t associate exercise with work. However, it doesn’t have to be that way with many organisations taking the lead to develop a culture of workplace fitness.
Current NHS guidelines suggest that exercising just once or twice a week can reduce the risk of heart disease or a stroke, and that’s all it takes to see improvements. Being inactive can sometimes have significant effects on our health and wellbeing. According to a recent study carried out on NHS employees, those who found time to exercise saw improvements in their health, a reduction in sickness absence and increased job satisfaction.
You may also find that your day is more productive after getting that energy boost whilst out running or taking a short walk, getting those tasks done that have been getting you down and tackling them head-on. This may improve your workplace performance and according to the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, moderate exercise allows for higher-quality work and better performance in jobs than those who lead sedentary lifestyles.
The keyword here is moderate! You don’t have to go out and run a half marathon every evening to feel the boost you’re looking for. A short run or walk once or twice a week is likely to make a difference to your health and may even allow you to find more satisfaction in your job and who doesn’t want that?
Make sure to find that bit of extra time in the week to look after you. The opportunities are endless, and it can be a life-shaping experience waiting for you right outside your door. Take that run and experience a change of scenery or take a walk around the park and allow yourself the headspace to be creative and come up with new ideas. You’ll soon notice the changes in your work life and daily tasks, and you won’t regret it!
